Actress Shubhangi Atre’s former husband, Piyush Poorey, passed away on Saturday following a prolonged battle with liver cirrhosis. The news of his demise has left close family and friends in deep sorrow.
Piyush, a digital marketing professional, had reportedly been ailing for some time. His health had been deteriorating steadily, leading to his untimely demise.
The couple, who tied the knot in 2003, were married for 22 years before they were officially granted a divorce on February 5, 2025. They have a teenage daughter, Ashi.
While Shubhangi and Piyush were reportedly not on talking terms at the time of his passing, a source close to the actress shared, “Shubhangi is mourning his loss deeply. Despite their differences, she respected the years they spent together. She has resumed shooting for her show Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai on Sunday.”
When approached for a statement, Shubhangi responded, “Your thoughtfulness during this time means a great deal to me. I request you to give me some time to talk about this.”
In an earlier interview with Bombay Times post-divorce, the actress had opened up about the emotional toll of their separation. “It was painful. I was fully invested in the relationship. Over time, Piyush and I developed irreconcilable differences,” she had said. “Now, I’m out of that marriage, and I feel a sense of peace, as if a heavy burden has been lifted. My focus is now on my daughter, and I want to provide her with a happy and secure environment.”
Shubhangi had also shared that the couple had been living separately for almost a year before the divorce. “We tried our best to save our marriage. But eventually, we realised that we couldn’t resolve our differences and decided to move forward with our individual lives.”
The television industry and well-wishers have extended their condolences to Shubhangi and her family during this difficult time.
