In a significant step toward women’s empowerment and improving public transportation, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today flagged off 20 pink buses dedicated to women, along with 166 deluxe buses for inter-district travel across Bihar. The inauguration ceremony, organized by the Transport Department, took place at 1 Aney Marg, where CM Nitish personally inspected the buses and reviewed the facilities available onboard.
These pink buses are a part of a special initiative aimed at providing safer and more comfortable travel for women. While female drivers could not be appointed for the first phase, all conductors on these buses will be women. The introduction of pink buses is not just symbolic but a practical step towards creating a gender-sensitive transport system in the state.
In the first phase, the 20 pink buses will be deployed across six cities in Bihar — with 8 buses in Patna, 4 in Muzaffarpur, and 2 buses each in Darbhanga, Bhagalpur, Gaya, and Purnia. The government has also launched 166 deluxe buses to facilitate smoother inter-district travel, enhancing connectivity and travel comfort for passengers throughout the state.
The pink buses are equipped with modern safety features, including CCTV cameras and panic buttons. For the convenience of passengers, the buses also provide mobile charging points and microphones, although the control of these features lies solely with the driver.
As for the fare structure, women commuters will be charged between ₹6 to ₹25 for daily travel. Monthly passes are also available—₹400 for students and ₹550 for working women — making this an economical option for regular travel.
This initiative by the Bihar government marks a commendable effort toward women’s safety and mobility. The pink buses are expected to provide a secure, reliable, and comfortable travel experience, making everyday commuting easier for women across the state.
