In a landmark decision, the Bihar government has officially renamed the historic and religious city of Gaya as “Gaya Ji”. This move, which highlights the city’s immense spiritual and cultural significance, was approved during a high-level cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday. A government press release confirmed the name change, marking a significant cultural and emotional moment for devotees and residents alike.
A Sacred City with Ancient Roots
Gaya holds a revered place in Hindu tradition. Every year, millions of devotees visit this city during Pitru Paksha to perform Pind Daan—a sacred ritual meant to bring peace to the souls of departed ancestors. The city’s religious legacy is deeply rooted in mythology. According to ancient scriptures, in the Treta Yuga, a demon named Gayasura attained a divine boon through intense penance, transforming into a holy soul. Since then, the place has been known as Gaya. With the new name, Gaya Ji, the spiritual essence of the city is further elevated and respected.
A Long-Awaited Change
This name change is not sudden—it is the result of years of consistent efforts. Local MLA and Bihar’s Cooperation Minister Prem Kumar expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Chief Minister, noting that he had been advocating for this change for over a decade. In 2022, the Gaya Municipal Corporation had unanimously passed a resolution to support renaming the city as Gaya Ji, reflecting the sentiments of the people.
Modern Infrastructure Meets Spiritual Heritage
Apart from the name change, Gaya Ji is also witnessing a transformation in terms of infrastructure. The Gaya Ji Railway Station has been upgraded with state-of-the-art facilities and is set to be inaugurated soon. From improved cleanliness and digital amenities to passenger-friendly services, the station now offers a modern travel experience while staying rooted in spiritual tradition.
This renaming is more than a symbolic gesture—it is a recognition of faith, heritage, and the emotional connection that millions of Indians have with Gaya. By officially calling it Gaya Ji, the government has reinforced the city’s identity as a timeless center of spirituality.
